Sharks have been around for 400 million years, making them the perfect species of evolution. They were around even before the dinosaurs. Homo sapiens have been around for about 300, 000 – 500, 000 years. The word “sapiens” comes from the Latin root sapient, which means being wise. If we are so wise, then why have we wiped out about 90% of the shark population, among other things? We need to stop acting like we have the power to dictate what species should live and die.
There are about 5-10 to fatal shark attacks every year. They attack NOT BECAUSE we’re yummy, but because we’re mistaken as seals, or because we provoke them through shark-feeding expeditions. We, on the other hand, kill 100 million sharks annually. That’s like 10 million sharks: 1 human being.
Unlike fish, sharks can’t be spawned. They have a low rate of reproduction. And what most people don’t realize is that saving sharks means saving humans. Much of the oxygen we breathe comes from planktons, which are at the bottom of the food chain. Planktons are funky-looking microscopic things in the sea that release oxygen and provide food to other organisms, like fish and whale sharks. Sharks, being the apex of the marine ecosystem, eat the big fish that eat the small fish that eat the zooplanktons, which eat the phytoplanktons. Sharks maintain the balance of the ecosystem. Wiping out sharks would mean the collapse of the entire ecosystem.
